Temperament & Interaction Styles
How People Create Movement, and What They Fundamentally Trust
This framework uses two separate but intersecting lenses on personality. Neither one is the whole picture alone, and neither should be collapsed into the other.
Interaction Style
How a person typically creates movement with other people — the form of their communication, the role they take, where their attention settles.
Temperament
What a person tends to trust and pursue when making sense of a problem — what they foreground, what makes an action legitimate, and whether they reach for a general standard or the particulars.
The governing rule of this manual: never type a person from a single behavior. Type repeated patterns observed across ordinary conversation, planning, conflict, relationships, and unstructured time — and always preserve counterevidence rather than forcing a fit.
Two layers, one person
A person's Interaction Style tells you how they will move. Their Temperament tells you why. The two layers should corroborate each other — they are diagnostic coordinates that should converge on one coherent picture, not six unrelated trait scores averaged together.
A note on the word “metric.” Each of the six dimensions below is a directional preference coded from repeated evidence — not a numerical score. There is no point total, no percentage, and no partial credit. Coding is a decision about which pole a person's behavior repeatedly returns to across contexts, so nothing on this page will hand you a fake “72% Directing.” The interactive tools here are for education and diagnostic exploration, not a six-click assessment.
Does the speaker state the desired action, or leave the listener to infer it?
Who creates the opening when nothing requires it?
Is success a terminal result, or a renewable trajectory?
Does explanation foreground pattern and meaning, or observation and procedure?
Is legitimacy grounded in effectiveness, or in obligation and belonging?
Should one standard generalize, or should motive and circumstance change the answer?
Attribution in brief: the models below derive principally from David Keirsey's temperament theory and Linda V. Berens' Interaction Styles and temperament work. Mongolian Mindset applies and operationalizes these established constructs; the full attribution and research-boundaries section is at the bottom of this page.
The Six-Metric Compass
Select either pole of any dimension to see its behavioral definition, decisive diagnostic question, a representative language example, what it's commonly mistaken for, and the opposing pole for direct contrast. These are coded independently — if your read of one dimension depends on your conclusion about another, the evidence has been contaminated.
Same Situation. Different Signal.
Pick a metric, then a scenario, then flip between the two poles to see how the exact same moment produces genuinely different, equally valid language. These examples are drawn directly from the source manual.
Finish Line vs. Horizon
Both poles can be ambitious, disciplined, long-term, and goal-oriented. The difference is where psychological attention and reward settle: on a completion criterion, or on the trajectory itself. Outcome is not impatience. Progression is not aimlessness.
Outcome
“I will sell 100 cars.”
A clear completion criterion. Once the hundredth car is sold, the goal is satisfied and attention transfers to the next result. Activity that doesn't materially advance the target is more readily cut as noise, delay, or cost.
Progression (Process)
“I will be the best salesman.”
Lived as a renewable standard: prospecting, communication, follow-up, closing, and judgment can always be refined. A milestone is usually evidence of movement, not the end of the project — the standard renews as competence grows.
The Outcome question is usually “Does this get us to the result?” The Progression question is usually “Does this improve the way we move, and therefore the results we can keep producing?” This is not “goal-oriented vs. process-oriented” — both are goal-oriented. It is closed target-state optimization versus renewable trajectory optimization, and it cuts across MBTI's J/P entirely.
How Language Reveals the Pattern
Abstract preference compresses reality into patterns, meanings, and possibilities. Concrete preference anchors explanation in observation, chronology, and procedure. This is a representation preference, not an intelligence hierarchy — Abstract is not smarter, and Concrete is not simple. Tap a marker to see both sides of the same moment.
Scoring figurative language without fooling yourself
Pragmatic vs. Affiliative
This is fundamentally a legitimacy metric, not a morality metric.
“When effectiveness and social obligation pull in different directions, what makes the action legitimate?”

Historical lineage: Keirsey to Berens
Treat the mapping as conceptual lineage, not word-for-word identity. And a note on “the ends justify the means”: it's a rough memory aid for the Utilitarian side, and far too absolute as a definition. The precise claim is that Pragmatic reasoning judges means largely by whether they work — not that any end morally licenses any method.
Systematic (Universalist) vs. Interest-Based (Particularist)
Berens names this polarity Structure vs. Motive. Keep it distinct from Pragmatic vs. Affiliative: that metric asks where legitimacy comes from. This one asks how far a standard should reach.

Decisive question: “Should similar cases usually receive the same solution?” — the single most diagnostic question on this metric is when it is appropriate to make an exception.
Interaction Style Profiles
Treat each style as a whole behavioral pattern, not a score assembled from three unrelated traits. All four styles pursue results — the word appears in every description below. What separates them is where attention anchors: on the completion criterion, or on the route and its development.
One pressure situation, four first moves
A team has missed two deadlines and the client wants an answer by end of day.

Temperament Profiles
Each temperament is the intersection of the three temperament metrics. The names Rational, Idealist, Guardian, and Artisan are Keirsey's, retained here for continuity across Mongolian Mindset materials.
One problem, four temperament motives
A talented employee repeatedly ignores the established process but still produces strong short-term results.

How Mongolian Mindset Types People
Do not type from a single behavior. The four-letter label comes after the behavioral evidence, not before it. Repeated patterns across contexts matter, and counterevidence must be preserved rather than explained away.
Evidence hierarchy
The typing sequence
Establish a baseline from ordinary speech and spontaneous interaction — not only polished interviews or professional performance.
Code Directing vs. Informing using multiple exact requests and corrections.
Code Initiating vs. Responding from unstructured openings, contact creation, and re-engagement.
Code Outcome vs. Progression from the four converging signals — goal architecture, reward location, perceived forward movement, and detour logic — confirmed across multiple domains.
Infer Interaction Style only when all three metrics converge on one whole pattern. Investigate contradictions rather than averaging them away.
Code Abstract vs. Concrete from explanation structure, not vocabulary alone.
Code Pragmatic vs. Affiliative from legitimacy conflicts, especially where effectiveness and obligation point in different directions.
Code Systematic vs. Interest-Based from exception logic.
Infer Temperament only after the motive repeats across work, conflict, relationships, and self-description.
Intersect the stable Interaction Style and Temperament patterns once both are independently supported. The four-letter type is downstream of the six-metric evidence — never used to retroactively reinterpret contradictory observations.
Search actively for disconfirming evidence and for the strongest neighboring type.
State calibrated confidence and name the evidence that would falsify the current conclusion.
Worked case: running the full sequenceA composite, anonymized example+
A team lead, observed across six weeks of ordinary meetings, planning sessions, and one unplanned conflict.
“Here's what we're doing — Priya owns intake, I own the client call.” At lunch, unprompted: “so what's everyone actually working on.” When a deadline slipped: “what do we need true by Friday for this to still count as delivered.” Describing a past failure: “the real problem was that ownership was never assigned.” When a fast fix violated process: “the process should have flagged this risk earlier — I'll take the exception and we fix the process afterward.” Asked if two similar personnel situations should be handled the same way: “only if the underlying failure is actually the same.”
All three Interaction Style metrics converge on In-Charge. All three Temperament metrics converge on Rational. The evidence is most consistent with an ENTJ-shaped In-Charge Rational pattern — though ESTJ remains a live neighbor until Abstract/Concrete is tested further, since ESTJ is also In-Charge but Guardian rather than Rational.
Falsification test: ESTJ rises if future explanations repeatedly prove Concrete rather than Abstract. INTJ rises if unstructured observation shows Responding and Progression. ENFJ rises if legitimacy repeatedly centers on Affiliative obligation rather than Pragmatic effectiveness. The next interview should deliberately target those disputed metrics — if the predicted counterevidence appears, revise the type rather than defending the first conclusion.

Sources, Lineage, and What This Framework Can't Claim
The models on this page derive principally from David Keirsey's temperament theory and Linda V. Berens' Interaction Styles and temperament work. Mongolian Mindset applies and operationalizes these established constructs; it does not claim authorship of them. Keirsey's modern temperament work systematized the four patterns used throughout — Artisan, Guardian, Idealist, and Rational — and emphasized the Cooperative/Utilitarian action distinction. Berens developed the Interaction Styles model and the contemporary temperament framework applied here, including the three interaction dynamics and three temperament dynamics that organize this page. Neither theorist originated the label “Mongolian Mindset” uses for its own operational vocabulary where that vocabulary differs — those differences are labeled explicitly throughout, with the original term preserved beside it.
What Mongolian Mindset contributes is depth of description and diagnostic discipline: observable behavioral markers for each dimension, same-situation contrasts, common false positives, interview prompts, evidence-weighting standards, and the step-by-step coding protocol above — so the framework can be applied consistently rather than intuitively. The intent is to make an established system easier to apply accurately, extending Keirsey's and Berens' work, not replacing it.
What this framework can and cannot claim+

A note on Initiating/Responding and EEG research+
Within the sixteen-type mapping, Initiating aligns with the Extraverted types and Responding with the Introverted types. Dario Nardi has reported exploratory EEG patterns in which extraverts appeared more front-weighted in neural engagement, moving toward outward response through shorter routes, while introverts appeared more back-weighted, with longer internal processing before outward response.
Treat this only as a possible neural correlate of the familiar “engage, then reflect” versus “reflect, then engage” rhythm. It is not a diagnostic test, and it is not a settled finding. Independent peer-reviewed EEG research does not converge on a single front-versus-back rule, and some published findings point the other way — Knyazev, Bocharov & Pylkova (2012), using independent component analysis, associated agentic extraversion with higher posterior and lower orbitofrontal theta activity, the reverse of a simple front-weighted rule. The wider EEG/ERP literature on extraversion varies with protocol, task, sample, frequency band, and how extraversion is measured.
None of this weakens the Initiating/Responding distinction itself, which rests on direct observation of who creates the opening — not on brain imaging. The neural correlate is a far weaker claim than the behavioral one and should never be presented as proof. Behavioral evidence remains primary.
The Berens Interaction Styles structure
Linda V. Berens' published model defines three interaction dynamics (Directing/Informing, Initiating/Responding, Outcome/Process) and, for Temperament, Abstract/Concrete language, Affiliative/Pragmatic roles, and Structure/Motive focus. Mongolian Mindset uses Progression for Berens' Process pole (paired on first use), and operationalizes Structure/Motive as Systematic (Universalist) vs. Interest-Based (Particularist) for easier behavioral coding — working diagnostic translations, not exact synonyms for the source terms. Current Berens materials often use the temperament names Theorist, Catalyst, Stabilizer, and Improviser; this page preserves Keirsey's Rational, Idealist, Guardian, and Artisan for continuity across Mongolian Mindset materials.
